Facebook Video Ads: Placements, Sizes and What Works
Where a Facebook ad actually appears
"Facebook video ad" is really four or five different ads. The same campaign can run in the feed, between Reels, inside Stories, in the right column and in-stream on longer video — and each of those has its own shape, its own length and its own audience.
You do not have to make four videos. Pick the placements you care about, make the shapes those placements want, and reuse the same message across them. In Movidmo a template comes in wide, square and vertical, so one design covers the feed and the full-screen placements.
The one thing every placement shares: it plays muted until someone chooses otherwise. Whatever the ad says, it has to say on screen.
Facebook video ad, video advertisement, promo, advert: they all name the same thing here, and the templates on this page make any of them.

Facebook video ad sizes by placement
| Placement | Best shape | Good to know | In Movidmo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed | 1:1 square or 4:5, 1080×1080 | Taller fills more of the screen; the feed accepts video far longer than anyone watches | Square |
| Reels | 9:16 vertical, 1080×1920 | Keep text out of the top 14% and bottom 35%, where the interface sits | Vertical |
| Stories | 9:16 vertical, 1080×1920 | Same safe zone as Reels; people tap through quickly | Vertical |
| In-stream video | 16:9 wide, 1920×1080 | Runs inside someone else's video, so the first seconds carry everything | Wide |
| Marketplace & search | 1:1 square, 1080×1080 | Shown small, so keep type large and the product obvious | Square |
| Cross-posting to Instagram | 9:16 vertical or 1:1 square | One campaign can run on both; the vertical cut travels furthest | Vertical or square |

Tips for Facebook video ads that work
Make it vertical first
Reels and Stories are full screen on a phone. A vertical cut fits them, and a square one still works in the feed, so vertical plus square covers almost everything.
Write for sound off
The feed plays muted. Put the offer on screen as text and make the captions count.
Respect the safe zone
In Reels and Stories the interface covers the top 14% and bottom 35%. Anything important there is covered by a button.
Open with the offer
A scrolling thumb decides in about a second. Lead with the product, the discount or the problem, not with a logo animation.
Make several versions
Meta rewards testing. One template, three headlines and two colour schemes is an afternoon's work when the design is already built.
End with one next step
Match the on-screen ending to the call-to-action button you pick in Ads Manager, so the ad and the click say the same thing.
