Generate Wavy Designs
Wavy designs captivate with their natural elegance and fluidity, drawing inspiration from the curves found in nature—ocean waves, rolling hills, flowing hair, and wind-swept patterns in sand. These sinuous forms carry a sense of motion, softness, and continuity that stands in contrast to the rigidity of straight lines and geometric shapes. The beauty of wavy designs lies in their ability to evoke emotion, suggest movement, and create a visual rhythm that is both calming and dynamic.
Their applications span a wide array of fields. In architecture, wavy forms are used to create sculptural facades, organic interiors, and structures that blend harmoniously with natural landscapes. In fashion and textile design, waves add flow, elegance, and dimension. In branding, they offer a modern, creative edge—often symbolizing innovation, flexibility, or harmony. Even in user interface design, wavy elements can guide the eye and soften transitions, contributing to a more engaging experience.
In the world of graphic design, wavy designs play an especially powerful role. In static images, they can introduce depth, draw attention to focal points, or convey mood and atmosphere—whether through subtle gradients, abstract linework, or dynamic compositions. In video, waves bring motion to life, whether through animated transitions, rippling effects, or morphing shapes that mimic organic movement. Motion graphics often rely on wave-like animations to create flow and continuity, while visual storytelling can use undulating visuals to symbolize emotions, time, or transformation.Whether used in backgrounds, overlays, or as key visual elements, wavy designs add a sense of artistry and fluid sophistication that enhances the narrative and emotional resonance of visual content. The Movidmo Wavy Design Generator is a great mechanism for creating wavy design elements that can be customized for any specific application or as standalone pieces of art. The discussion below covers all of the features of the generator and how to use it to create various types of design features.
Selecting Colors
The tool creates layers of colorful waves that stack one upon the other. The generator offers two color inputs with only the first input used by default. Specifying only the first color input produces a wavy pattern with the selected color at the center of the visual and a color gradient to a lighter color both above and below it.
When only the second color input is specified, the selected color is used at the top and bottom of the design with the same gradient to a lighter color sandwiched in the center of the graphic.
When both colors are specified, the first color is placed at the bottom of the design and the second color is placed at the top with a gradient of colors connecting the two. The gradient itself is somewhat unique in that it seeks to avoid the dingy gray area when connecting colors on opposite sides of the color wheel. The color swap button can be used to switch the roles of the two colors in the graphic.
Controlling Smoothness
After color selection, the overall complexity of the visual can be easily controlled with the Smoothness slider. Adjusting this value makes the output more or less bumpy. Less smoothing provides a busier visual while more smoothing leads to a cleaner flowing design.
The Waves Menu
The generator allows for the specification of the wave parameters to be used under the Waves menu. Perhaps most importantly, the number of layers used in the graphic can be specified to be between 2 and 20. Lower values create simpler output with fewer colors while larger values create much more complex output featuring a wider range of colors. Odd values can be used to create a clear central color in the design.
The characteristics used to build the wave in each layer can also be specified. Each wave is constructed by accumulating the values of a root mathematical function placed atop randomly generated points. Each point roughly corresponds to a bump in the wave. Both the number of wave points and the root wave function can be specified in the interface.
Using fewer wave points leads to simpler designs with more wave points adding to the complexity. The default root function is a bell-shaped curve which produces smooth designs. The root function can be changed to either a triangle or rectangular shape. These two options will provide a "pointy" or "blocky" visual, respectively. The impact of the root function is clearer with fewer wave points.
The Motion Menu
Unlike most tools in this space, the Movidmo Wavy Design Generator creates animated motion graphics by default, each moving in visually engaging and dynamic ways. The settings defining the motion are found under the Motion menu.
The speed of the animation can be controlled by adjusting the Period input, which determines the time (in seconds) required for the animation to complete one full cycle. A lower period value results in quicker, more energetic motion—often conveying a sense of nervous energy—while a higher period value slows the movement, producing a calm and relaxed visual effect.
The change in the rate of speed over the course of the period can be controlled by selecting an easing function. The default easing function provides a smooth rate of movement. Numerous options are available.
For those who prefer static designs, the animation can be disabled by toggling the Animate switch, allowing for the generation of still designs instead. Static designs have different export options than animated designs as discussed below.
The Size Menu
The width and height (in pixels) of the design can be specified under the Size menu. In addition to the manual inputs, common design sizes are also provided as as series of buttons for easy selection. The common sizes provided are based on full 1080p high-definition standards.
Generating A New Design
Perhaps the most important feature of the generator is its ability to randomly generate new designs. Simply click the New button to create a new random design based on the generators current configuration. One can search through designs by repeatedly pressing this button to find the ideal design to suit specific goals.
Exporting And Sharing A Design
Once the ideal design is found, click the Export button to view available download options. For animated designs, an animated GIF can be generated. For static designs, options are provided for downloading a scalable SVG file or a PNG image.
In addition, all designs, animated or static, can be opened directly in the Movidmo video editor using the Open In Movidmo option. This allows users to further customize their designs with the full suite of creative tools offered by the editor such as adding text overlays and much more.
To share a design with others for feedback, click the Link button to copy a custom URL to the clipboard. This link can be pasted into a text message or an email. When opened, the exact design that was created will be displayed. These links can also be saved for future reference, making it easy to revisit favorite designs at any time.
